Sonia Malfa is a writer-director drawn to the quiet, transformative work of being human. Shaped by her years as a wilderness educator and her studies in race and gender, her storytelling weaves together nature, myth, and cultural memory into intimate narratives grounded in emotional truth.

Her directing career spans narrative shorts, commercials, branded content, and episodic documentary television. She helmed a docuseries for Peacock/Comcast and has directed commercial campaigns for Nike, Ulta Beauty, Facebook (Latinx Heritage Month), Vogue Italia, Condé Nast – Them, L'Oréal, State Farm, and Citibank, among others. Sonia's work has earned recognition from the Tribeca Film Festival, Clio Awards, Webby Awards, Telly Awards, The One Show, Kinsale Shark Awards, and the 1.4 Awards.

She is a 2024 fellow of the NALIP/Netflix Women of Color Incubator and directed the narrative short La Sangre Llama (festival premiere 2026). She is a member of the Actors Studio Directors Unit, an alumna of the DGA/AICP Commercial Directors Diversity Program, and has received support from the Jerome Foundation and NYSCA.

Sonia is in late development on her debut narrative feature It's Always Sunni, a magical realist road trip, supported by Film Independent's Fast Track, Gotham Week's U.S. Features in Development, the WIF x Sundance Financing Intensive, and the NALIP Latino Media Market. She is also developing The Seeded Earth, an Indigenous sci-fi thriller episodic series.

She holds a B.A. and M.A. in American Studies with a focus on Gender and Race. Sonia is dedicated to building inclusive, cinematic worlds, both on screen and behind the camera.
